UPI payments without an internet
The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has made changes to the way UPI transactions are processed. Starting today, millions of users across India will benefit from faster status updates and shorter wait times when their UPI payments fail.
As the revised changes take effect, successful UPI transactions, such as transferring money to friends or making purchases, will be completed in around 15 seconds, a significant improvement from the previous window. This new rule is applicable to all UPI platforms, including Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, BHIM, and bank-specific UPI apps.
Here are the key changes that are announced
Transaction time cut in half: Instead of taking 30 seconds to complete, payments now take only 15 seconds.
Faster failure alerts: Rather than waiting up to 30 seconds, users will receive a notification within 10 seconds if a transaction fails.
Faster retry windows: Previously taking 90 seconds, banks and apps can now recheck pending transactions in 45–60 seconds.
Auto-fail on technical errors: To prevent delays, transactions that fail to reach the UPI system because of network problems will be marked as failed right away.

Limited status checks: The status of each transaction can only be checked three times in a two-hour period in order to manage load.
With these changes, the authorities hope to make it faster and easier to make fund transfers and send money via UPI by addressing common issues such as confusion and anxiety about whether your money is stuck. These changes will also be useful if there is a network hiccup or server lag. To recall, India processes over 12 billion UPI transactions each month.
